Firstly, through SEB program, I found out some differences between Japanese work place to Canadian work place. The most interest thing is server at any restaurants or cafes are close to customer like a friend. Their conversations and responses are not as stiff and formal as in Japan, but rather flat and fun. Also, they ask customers during meal “Is everything okay? Is there anything I can help you?”, that was one of surprising experience in Canada. They take care about customer while they are in their place. I feel it is related with suggestive selling I learnt at Food & Beverage class.       Also, good attitude, smile, wording, those are essential to work in the hospitality field since customer judge the store’s evaluation by impression from staff. Greeting is simple, but many people tend to take it lightly, especially during busy time or they are tired, staff forget smiling. Knowing how to self-motivate is also significant.   ...

Reflection of a career in the hospitality

The first day when the program started, I felt anxious about learning specialized knowledge in English. Actually, my English level is not high, vocabulary to convey my feeling is not enough, especially I was poor at speaking in front of people. However, all of teacher from ILAC was always encouraged me, I was getting used to new environment little by little.      The most unforgettable class was Event Planning. We were assigned into some group, and made plan for wine tasting event which was competition with other classes.       So, I leant through this class, how difficult/ important teamwork is.       I think it is because we had distance each other. Even though we were classmates, only chat with close proper friends. No team project will work if you don't know each other very well.      Some students came into the class late, some students left class early, during team project, they d...

Reflection to my future dream

Image
Since I’m curious to work in the Food & Beverage industry the most, I would like to reflect those field what I learnt from SEB program.       I have a dream. I hope I could have a tiny restaurant that serves homemade food with drinks. This is one of my dreams what I want to make it come true one day during my life.       The restaurant only allowed 10 people to enter in, and everyone have a seat at counter. On the other side of the counter is me, the owner of the restaurant, who chats with customers while serving dishes made with seasonal ingredients along with alcoholic beverages. To be honest, there is no specific model company or restaurant, I would like to try creating my restaurant from zero.       This style of restaurant, customers are able to see what I am cooking right now while they are eating, also they can ask me to make anything what they want to eat. By hearing customer’s preference, then I...

Challenges in delivering customer service

Image
Barriers are interspersed in our lives, and they sometimes become harsh and difficult, creating a distance between people. First of all, barriers are such as laziness, poor communication skills, poor time management, attitude, moodiness, lack of adequate training and so on. Those barriers are must be overcame and you should demonstrate your professionalism instead of that. By the way, as I told you, I am a coffee person. One of my favorite time is cafe-hopping, so I am glad to live in Canada which is flourishing cafĂ© culture. I’ve been to several cafes since I came in Vancouver, Canada, then I’ve been feeling some barriers they have. If they improve more customer service, I will go more often… Let’s see 3 cafes, and compare their customer services and their challenges!        1.Breka Bakery & Cafe            2.Cafe Kitsune                    3.Tim Hortons      Breka Bak...

You can see here more clearly!        Customer service is deep, and the more you pursue it, the better it gets. However, if you follow the basics firmly, I think you can provide customer service that pleases everyone, regardless of whether you are a veteran or a newcomer.    The reason why I chose those 5 components is it is very basics.  I created this infographic because I believe that acquiring these skills will lead to better customer service.

Success and Weakness

Image
What service do you expect to Fast food restaurant? Price? Or speed of delivery?       Continuing from the last time, I am going to talk about success and weakness with Tim Horton as a topic.      Tim Hortons is the most popular coffee chain in Canada. You will see tons of red letters that say “Tim Hortons”.      I would say offering various coffee with reasonable price is one the success with Tim Hortons. A cup of small size coffee only costs $1.59, even though you order large size coffee, $2 is enough. Not only coffee, but also their donuts are popular with a wide range of customers. They also sell muffins, and light meal such as wrap or sandwiches. This is the biggest reason that Tim Hortons is loved by people.      To be honest, their customer service is not high levels. Average greeting, smiling, and attitude. But it is fine, because what people expect from them is not great customer se...

MOT at Tim Hortons

Image
Do you like coffee? Do you like Tim Hortons? YES! I am a coffee person, and I love Tim Hortons! There are two Tim Hortons stores near my workplace. However, I only go to one of the stores. Why do you think that is ? Because I became a loyal customer of that store.       It happened few month ago. Usually, I use Tim Hortons app to get discount. When I was going to activate coupon, the app didn't work. As the staff looked a bit frustrated, I gave up to use coupon. I was sad that I was unable to purchase what I wanted at a discounted price. Even though there was no customer behind me, the staff’s attitude made me more upset and after all I got coffee without joy.    Something similar happened again. But, it happened at another store (For simplicity, let’s call it “B”).  When I open the app, it didn't connect internet quickly. I was a bit upset as I remembered the previous unhappy experience that I had, also I noticed that there were some customers wa...
